* * * *

At first Melvin thought Seth was teasing. Really? They’d just had mind-blowing sex, and all Melvin wanted to do was go back to sleep, but the grave look in Seth’s eyes told him the guy wasn’t kidding around.

“What is it?” Melvin wasn’t sure why he was whispering.

Seth was up and getting dressed, while Melvin still lay there confused. But he jumped up and did the same as his mate mouthed the word hellhound.

Melvin’s heart froze in place. He had to have heard him wrong. There was no way the guy from the bar knew where he lived. Why on earth would he come after Melvin?

Seth pointed to Melvin’s feet, and Melvin understood that he needed to grab some shoes. It was the fastest he’d ever gotten his sneakers and slipped them on. He also remembered to grab his inhaler, wallet, and keys off the coffee table, as well as his new phone.

Seth grabbed his hand and hurried them to the kitchen. Melvin had a backdoor that led to a fire escape. When he’d first gotten the apartment, the door had creeped him out. He kept thinking anyone could break in and no one on the street would see the person.

But now he was grateful it was there.

Seth eased the back door open, and they took off down the stairs, trying to be as quiet as possible. When their feet hit the ground, Seth grabbed Melvin’s hand and hurried toward the street.

They had to take the alley on the side of Papa’s Pizza, but their escape was short-lived. Seth came to a hard stop when they spotted the biggest freaking dog Melvin had ever seen. It was the size of a miniature pony!

Melvin had never been fond of dogs. Not since he’d been bitten in his youth. Rottweilers scared the crap out of him, and the size of this one made him want to faint. It stood with its legs spread apart, its sharp teeth showing as it growled, and its ears were pinned back.

“What’s going on?” Melvin gripped Seth’s hand tighter.

“The hellhound.”

“What?” Melvin looked from Seth to the dog. “That’s the hellhound from the bar?”

Holy crap. He really was going to faint. Had Melvin known at the time, he would have steered clear of the guy. Hell, he would have never left his apartment that night.

“Just stay behind me,” Seth said. “Whatever you do, don’t let his teeth get anywhere near you.”

Little Red Riding Hood popped into Melvin’s mind, and he wanted to say, “Grandma, what big teeth you have.” Fuck, was this how he handled stress? It wasn’t how he’d reacted back in Sunshine Grove. Melvin had nearly wet himself and begged Seth not to kill him. Idiot thoughts hadn’t entered his mind.

“Aside from the obvious, what happens if he bites me?”

“Death,” Seth said. “There is a toxin in his saliva that will instantly kill you.”

“Next time lie to me.” Melvin grabbed his inhaler from his pocket and took two puffs.

“We swore honesty,” Seth reminded him.

“Fuck honesty.
